Genomics has the potential to be used in various aspects of mining, including bioleaching, bioremediation, and environmental monitoring.
By understanding and utilizing genetic information from microorganisms, we can optimize mineral extraction, while also playing a role in bioremediation by helping to remove harmful chemicals from tailings. By regularly measuring the presence of DNA in soil from micro and macro-organisms across various locations near and on-site, we can use the local biodiversity as a way to monitor the impact of mining activities and remediation efforts on the environment.
