This project addresses the significant threat posed by invasive zebra mussels to Nova Scotia’s ecosystems, industries, and communities. By combining environmental DNA methods, active searches, and passive monitoring with settling plates, the initiative aims to establish a comprehensive surveillance program for early detection and rapid response to zebra mussel invasions. The insights gained will support the development of a long-term freshwater surveillance program, benefiting industries, governments, Indigenous Peoples, and environmental conservation efforts that depend on clean water and healthy ecosystems.
