April 28, 2025 – Genome Canada, in partnership with Genome Atlantic and Genome Centres across Canada, is pleased to announce the new Indigenous Genomics Training and Capacity program, launched in April 2025. The funding opportunity will support Indigenous-led education and training in genomics. It aims to strengthen the skills of First Nations (status and non-status), Métis, and Inuit students and community members so they can lead or participate in genomics research in ways that reflect and respect Indigenous rights, values, and knowledge systems.
The program will invest in partnerships that help Indigenous people build careers in genomics and move into independent research roles. Training will combine Indigenous perspectives with modern science, technology, and social sciences. Funding for the program comes from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED).
The program offers up to $400,000 from Genome Canada and supports up to two projects across Canada. Applications are due September 15, 2025. Notification of successful applicants will be expected to be announced by mid-October, with funded projects to start in early January 2026.
