Genome Atlantic Announces Release of Mining Sector Report and Targeted Funding Opportunity

Atlantic Canada is well positioned to benefit from rising global demand for critical minerals, supported by strong resource endowments, strategic geography, and significant research capacity. Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia have all identified mining as a strategic priority, yet the mining sector continues to face complex challenges, including demanding terrain, environmental and water management needs, legacy site liabilities, and meaningful Indigenous and community engagement.

The Genomics and Mining in Atlantic Canada report commissioned by Genome Atlantic highlights how genomics can help address these challenges while creating new opportunities across the mining lifecycle.

Genomics and Mining in Atlantic Canada

Genomics-based approaches can enhance exploration by using microbial and environmental DNA (eDNA) to detect mineralized systems. In processing, genomics can support improved metallurgical recovery, increasing project value and reducing long-term closure liabilities. In operations, genomics strengthens treatment of tailings and mining-influenced water, improving performance and regulatory compliance. For legacy sites, biotechnologies such as bioleaching offer potential to recover residual metals while reducing environmental impact, and genomics-based monitoring can accelerate baseline assessments, permitting, and closure verification.

The Opportunity

The Genomics in Mining Innovation Fund Opportunity is intended to catalyze research initiatives that will advance identification, development and/or adoption of genomics-based approaches in mining that lead to impact and advancement of the sector regionally.

Potential themes may include but are not limited to: 

  • Microbial profiling to support exploration and discovery efforts
  • Biological treatment approaches for mining-impacted water
  • Enhanced extraction (bioleaching) from waste rock and reprocessed tailings
  • Baseline and rebound biodiversity assessment
  • Monitoring water quality and ecosystem health with eDNA
  • Bioremediation and rehabilitation of legacy sites or tailings ponds
