Monitoring methane leaks from abandoned oil wells

Oil-eating microbes can be very helpful at locating methane leaks from abandoned petroleum wells, both on land and at sea. Microbial genomics offers an innovative and accurate way to detect and characterize these leaks, providing a very useful tool to support environmental sustainability and industry practices.

Forest soil assessment for private woodlot owners

Healthy soils are the foundation of healthy forests and forest management. In Nova Scotia, private woodlot owners own 65% of forest land but have limited information of the health of their forest soils. This project aims to get the right forest soil health tools into the hands of private woodlot owners.

A cost-effective way to monitor marine biodiversity

Research cruises at sea can be very expensive, but research and sampling can be done opportunistically, using vessels already at sea. We are developing a cost-effective method for monitoring marine biodiversity using environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis collected by fishing boats, coast guard ships and other vessels already at sea.

Nova Scotia zebra mussel prevention plan

Invasive zebra mussels pose a threat to Atlantic Canada’s ecosystems, industries and communities. An innovative surveillance system is being put in place to detect zebra mussel invasions early and support better planning and conservation efforts.

$3.4M awarded to increase blue mussel production on PEI

Prince Edward Island-based Atlantic Aqua Farms, North America’s largest blue mussel grower, will co-lead a $3.4 million research project to develop Canada’s first-ever genomics selective breeding program

Sustainable salmon breeding
