New Funding Opportunity for Natural Resources

As the Atlantic provinces, and indeed the nation, work rapidly to advance initiatives that build our economic independence and sovereignty, there is an opportunity for research to generate new knowledge that can help advance priority industries and contribute to economic growth.

Through this opportunity, Genome Atlantic will catalyze and facilitate research initiatives that use genomics-based approaches to address critical gaps and advance industries of economic importance to the region. This program is an extension of Genome Canada’s National Genomics Applications Partnership Program (GAPP).

Priority areas and industries are described below along with examples of ways that genomics research might contribute to advancing the industry. GAPP proposals are required to clearly demonstrate how the proposed genomics-based research can address a critical gap for a receptor from at least one of these industries.

Applicants will be required to identify and describe the anticipated outcomes of the work for the receptor organization (a Canadian, for-profit enterprise), and for the region. In addition to a written submission, teams will have the opportunity to “pitch” their proposed project to a team of reviewers.

PRIORITY INDUSTRIES

Mining & Critical Minerals

With the growing demand for critical minerals across the clean technologies sector and access to deep water ports for international trade, the responsible and sustainable development of the mining and critical minerals industry represents a significant opportunity for regional economic growth. Genomics research could contribute to this industry by establishing comprehensive environmental impact and biodiversity assessment approaches with eDNA (environmental DNA), new approaches for bioremediation and reprocessing of tailings.

Energy Innovation

In an effort to meet net-zero targets, provinces across the Atlantic region have established strategic action plans and are rapidly mobilizing efforts to transition to clean and renewable energy sources, including wind, tidal, hydro, solar, and biomass. The contributions of genomics research for advancing these efforts are multifaceted. Some examples include environmental impact and biodiversity assessment for technology deployment using eDNA, microbial corrosion management, or microbial biosynthesis of products used in these industries.

Bioproducts and the Bioeconomy

As part of a sustainable, circular economy, biological resources can provide products, processes, services, or energy that can help grow a multitude of industries of regional importance, including agriculture, forestry, food and fisheries, pharmaceuticals, clean energy, among others.

Atlantic Canada has and continues to build capacity in the precision fermentation space, and regional interest in aquaculture, biomaterials, and sustainable agriculture. A few examples that offer exciting opportunities to expand and/or optimize aquaculture practices include improved disease resistance or growth rates, conservation of endangered or threatened fish species, and monitoring wild populations to ensure sustainable seafood harvesting.

  • Letter of Intent Application Form
    1. saved in PDF
