On behalf of the Board of Director of Genome Atlantic, we are pleased to share that Dr. Marlies Rise has been appointed the next President and Chief Executive Officer of Genome Atlantic, with a start date in early May 2026.
Marlies brings more than two decades of leadership experience across research administration, innovation ecosystems, and industry partnerships. She is widely recognized as a strategic and people-centred leader, with deep expertise in managing complex research and innovation environments and supporting research portfolios ranging from $160 million to over $270 million annually. Marlies’ experience positions her well to advance Genome Atlantic’s role in driving high-impact genomic research, commercialization, and collaboration across Atlantic Canada and beyond.
Marlies’ academic background includes a Ph.D. in Forest Biology from the University of Victoria and graduate and undergraduate degrees in Biology from St. Francis Xavier University. Earlier in her career, she worked at Genome Atlantic, and we are truly pleased to welcome her back at a pivotal time for the organization and broader innovation ecosystem.
As Genome Atlantic looks to its next chapter, the Board is confident that Marlies will strengthen strategic partnerships, deepen alignment with government and industry priorities, and expand opportunities for researchers, academic institutions and companies commercializing genomics opportunities across the region.
After 18 years of exceptional leadership, our current President and CEO Steve Armstrong leaves a strong and enduring legacy. Under his leadership, Genome Atlantic built deep partnerships across governments, universities, and the private sector, while building a highly focused, resilient, and impact-driven organization. The Board is working closely with Steve and Marlies to ensure a smooth and successful transition.
